How the DEXIS AI-Powered Platform Simplifies Digital Dentistry
Getting to Know the Advantages of AI for Dental Practices
There’s no doubt that artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are having a transformative impact on dental technology, as AI-enabled advancements continue to evolve and emerge on a rapid scale. And yet, according to a new Dentaly survey, only 35% of dentists have implemented AI in their dental practices, a relatively low adoption rate. The question remains: Why?
In a recent episode of the Raving Patients podcast, DEXIS Senior Director of Clinical Strategic Development, Jordan Reiss spoke with host Dr. Len Tau about practice hesitancy around about adopting AI, including concerns about complexity. They discussed how AI boosts workflow, efficiency, and productivity – and how DEXIS’s AI-powered platform makes digital dentistry easier than ever.
“We’re just entering the advent of AI across everything in dental,”
says Dr. Tau in his podcast conversation with Jordan. “And it’s amazing how fast in a couple of years things have come in and really changed how we’re looking at technology in the industry.”
While industry leaders like DEXIS have led the charge to innovate and provide AI-enabled dental technologies to support practice growth, many dentists and practices remain hesitant about embracing AI in their own diagnosis and treatment planning workflows.
For many practices, AI remains uncertain territory and comes with a perceived level of complexity. Doctors may be reluctant to implement new AI-enabled technologies and processes they and their teams are unfamiliar with. What’s more, many doctors prefer to continue using the equipment, technology and systems they’ve already invested in. A common mindset among is: “If it’s already working for me, why change it?”
“It reminds me of when we introduced CBCT and digital radiology,”
Jordan explains. “We see some of the same reluctance to embracing AI as we did to these technologies when they came out.”
AI-Powered Tools Give Practices an Advantage
But Jordan emphasizes just how critical it is for dental practices to leverage AI as a powerful diagnostic and treatment planning tool, one that drives efficiency and productivity as well as better patient outcomes. Indeed, according to the Dentaly survey, 77% of dentists who use AI say they saw positive outcomes in their practice since implementing it.
“AI is already here,”
Jordan says. “We’re already using it, like when we do an online search. Rejecting AI is like fighting against wearing glasses so you can see better. Practices need to move in this direction, with digital radiography plus AI. simplifies the complexities of digital dentistry.”
Jordan adds that practices shouldn’t think about AI as a replacement for staff, but as a tool that enables staff to be more efficient, productive and focused on patient care. By taking over the labor-intensive, mundane and rote tasks, automation can free dentists and their teams to spend their time on more critical and patient-centric activities.
“We’re using AI to do some heavy lifting behind the scenes so that dentists can diagnose with confidence,”
says Jordan. “They can streamline their workflows. And I say it a lot, but instead of being a technician, they could be a clinician.”
Dental Patients Are Embracing AI
And it’s not just clinicians who benefit from AI. Patients are beginning to understand the advantages as well. Dentaly reports that 42% of surveyed patients are comfortable receiving AI-based treatment, and 68% believe in the potential benefits of AI applications. What’s more, 65% of patients are open to receiving dental diagnosis and treatment that incorporate AI tools.
In fact, Jordan shares that dental patients may be more likely to accept a diagnosis delivered with the help of AI. “When the computer points the issue out, it’s not the dentist trying to sell the patient something,”
he explains. “It’s the computer making the suggestion. The dentist then takes this information and talks to the patient about what’s going on and what to do next.”
How DEXIS Simplifies the Adoption of AI
Even with the clear advantages of employing AI-enabled tools and technology, some practices may still have concerns about the complexity and disruption of adopting AI. To address these concerns, DEXIS has approached AI-powered technology in a way that makes it easier for practices to leverage AI to improve efficiencies, productivity and the patient experience. Starting with the original image capture, moving into the diagnostics and even into advanced treatment planning, every stage benefits from AI-driven solutions.
By bringing together 2D, 3D, and intraoral scans into a single AI-powered platform, DEXIS delivers a unified smart ecosystem that eliminates software headaches, streamlines workflows, as well as boosts diagnostic confidence.
“We designed our ecosystem to think like a dentist,”
Jordan explains. “The software seamlessly takes images from capture to clinical context, makes them instantly accessible, intelligently sorted, and visually aligned with the patient’s anatomy.”
“We’re connecting decision and decision-making,”
he adds. “By eliminating multiple systems and friction between image capture, diagnosis, and treatment, we’re empowering not just the doctor, but also the staff, to collaborate with labs and other doctors—to deliver treatment plans with precision, confidence and speed. That’s smart simplicity in action.”
At the core of this DEXIS ecosystem is the award-winning software DTX Studio™ Clinic. It unifies all image types and patient data into a centralized, intuitive view for easy retrieval and case presentations. More than just consolidating images and data, DTX Studio Clinic employs a host of AI-powered tools. These tools provide greater clarity into patient anatomy, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
Embracing AI with Confidence
As AI reshapes the dental landscape, the conversation is no longer about if, but rather how, this transformation will occur. The key is finding solutions that align with clinical workflows, reduce complexity, and enhance—not replace—the human touch in dentistry.
“I would say to practices that are still hesitant about AI, to just challenge yourself,”
Jordan encourages. “AI may by uncertain or uncomfortable territory, but the benefits of AI are worth it in terms of streamlined workflows, increased staff productivity, higher diagnostic confidence and accuracy, and greater case acceptance.”
Platforms that unify imaging, streamline diagnostics, and support collaborative care are paving the way for smarter, more confident decision-making. Whether you're just beginning to explore AI or looking to deepen its integration into your practice, the goal remains the same: better outcomes for patients, and more empowered teams.
The future of dentistry isn’t just digital—it’s intelligent. And it starts with tools that think like clinicians, work like assistants, and support care like partners.
Discover the Power of AI with DEXIS
“DEXIS envisions an operatory where imaging and diagnostics and treatment planning are all connected intelligently and visibly,”
says Jordan. “We’re not about adding complexity but removing it. AI will guide us toward smarter human-centered dentistry that helps patients understand their diagnosis and treatment and helps doctors and their teams be more patient-focused.”
